India toured England four times as the 'All India' team before independence in 1948. The first was in 1911, although it was not until the second trip in 1932 that they faced England in a test when they lost by 158 runs in a three day match at Lords. It was India's first ever test match, although Indian players had appeared before then in tests for England, most notably the great batsman K.S Ranjitsinhji and K.S. Duleepsinhji.
